Housewives tortured for dowry, mother-in-law detained

In this incident, on Thursday (October 27) afternoon, the mother-in-law of the victim of torture, Julekha Begum, was arrested by the Devidwar police station. 

The incident took place on Wednesday (October 26) at Dulal Mia's house in Dhamati village of Comilla's Devidwar upazila. 

On receiving the information, her relatives rescued the housewife with the help of the police at 11 pm and admitted her to the health complex. 

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Devidwar Police Station Kamal Krishna Dhar said that a case is under process in this regard.

It is known that the housewife was pressured by her in-laws to bring one lakh rupees from her father's house on Wednesday afternoon. As he did not agree to bring the money, his father-in-law, mother-in-law and aunt tied his hands to two coconut trees and tortured him physically. 

Under the pressure of the locals, the hands of the tortured housewife were untied, but they kept her in the house and tortured her again at night. On hearing the news, the relatives of the housewife went to the house to rescue her, but they were not allowed to enter the house. Later, with the help of Devidwar Thana Police, the relatives rescued him at 11 pm and admitted him to Devidwar Upazila Health Complex.

Housewife Jyotsna, a victim of torture under treatment at Upazila Health Complex, said that she got married to Helal, son of Dulal Mia of Dhamati village, about 16 years ago. At the time of marriage, a dowry of one and a half lakh taka is given to the bridegroom. 

He said, 'About 12 years ago, when my husband pressed for another two lakh rupees when he went to Oman, my brothers gave one lakh rupees. A year ago, he came to the country and again pressed for the remaining one lakh rupees. After my husband left, my father-in-law Dulal Mia, mother-in-law Julekha Begum, two nonads Moushumi and Pakhi continued to torture me. My hair was pulled out and almost finished. Their kill-punches and slaps have also moved their teeth. 

He also said, 'On Wednesday afternoon, father-in-law, mother-in-law, mother-in-law once again tortured me to bring 1 lakh taka to my father's house. At one point my hands were tied to two coconut trees and tortured. He does the same at home at night.'

The victim's mother Farida Begum said, 'I wanted to bring the girl many times. He did not come under the illusion of four children. There have been at least 10 to 12 arbitrations in the last 15 years, the son's side has accepted the arbitration award and reversed it. Now no one comes to arbitrate. My relatives don't go either. How much can we poor people pay? My four sons are daily labourers.' 

Kamal Krishna, OC of Devidwar police station, said that after receiving information at night, the police sent him and rescued him and sent him to the hospital. Later in the morning mother-in-law Julekha Begum was arrested. The case is under process. The rest will also be brought under the law.
