Inauguration of the country's first 6-lane bridge today
The country's first six-lane spectacular 'Madhumati Setu', built at Kalna Point in Lohagarh, Narail, a long-time dream of the people of south-western region, is being inaugurated today. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will inaugurate the bridge virtually from Gana Bhavan on Monday (October 10) at 12 noon. Cars will run on the bridge from the day of inauguration. If this bridge is opened, the distance from the capital Dhaka by road to the south-west will be reduced.

Through this, the long-term suffering of the people of at least 10 districts of the southwestern region will be reduced. Kashiani upazila of Gopalganj on the east bank of the bridge and Lohagra upazila of Narail on the west bank. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina had promised to build the bridge at an election rally in Narail on December 19, 2008 before the Ninth National Assembly elections. He inaugurated the foundation stone of the bridge in January 2015.
After the inauguration of the Padma Bridge on June 25, the need for the Kalnaghat bridge has increased among the people of Jessore and Narail in the southwestern region of the country. Kalnaghat is the gateway of people to the south-western region by crossing the Padma Bridge. On September 22, Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader visited the bridge. On that day, the bridge minister said, 'Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will inaugurate the bridge in October'.
The concerned said that all the works of the main bridge and connecting road constructed at Kalnaghat have been completed. Installation of lampposts on half of the bridge is completed. Eight booths have been installed in the toll plaza. The installation of equipment has also been completed there. The bridge is fully ready for vehicular movement. The bridge was constructed with funding from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) under the Roads and Highways Department's Cross Border Road Network Improvement Project.
Officials associated with the project said that a 150-meter long steel span has been installed in the middle of the bridge. The Nelson low arch type (curved like a bow) span was developed in Vietnam. The other spans on both sides of that span are PC girder (concrete). The six-lane bridge will be part of the Asian Highway. Four main lanes will be used for high-speed traffic and two lanes for low-speed traffic. The length of the bridge is 690 meters and the width is 27.10 meters. The connecting road on both sides is 4.273 kilometers with a width of 30.50 meters. The total cost of bridge construction is Tk 959.85 crore.
The project officials also said that although Padma Bridge has four lanes, Madhumati is the country's first six-lane bridge. Pilecap of Padma Bridge up to the water. According to the sources related to Souz and Transport, when this bridge is opened, the vehicles traveling from Benapole land port via Jessore will be able to travel through Padma Bridge via Kalna instead of Daulatdia-Paturia via Magura-Faridpur. In this, Benapole-Dhaka and Jessore-Dhaka distance will be reduced by 113 km, Khulna-Dhaka distance by 121 km and Narail-Dhaka distance by 181 km. Similarly, the distance between Dhaka and the industrial and commercial cities of Nawapara, Mongla Port and Satkhira will also decrease. The bridge on the Asian Highway will also play a direct role in road connectivity through Sylhet's Tamabil to Dhaka, Benapole and Kolkata.
